“I want to report a murder.” “Who was murdered?” “I was.” Told in flashback, Rudolph Maté’s race-against-time D.O.A. (Dead On Arrival – that’s one inversion of normal noir conventions the film presents, that a murder victim stays alive long enough to avenge his own death) is considered one of the essential films noir.

I am an optimistic by nature, but I hate forced happy endings. Maybe that’s why film noir is my favourite genre. I regard it as a prime contributor to restoring the balance disrupted by the traditional notion of a Hollywoodian happy ending.
