EDITOR’S NOTES
Directed by Joseph H. Lewis and photographed by John Alton, The Big Combo is a 1955 American film noir crime film about a detective’s obsession to bringing down a powerful gangster. It features Cornel Wilde, Richard Conte, Brian Donlevy and Jean Wallace.

I am an optimistic by nature, but I hate forced happy endings. Maybe that’s why film noir is my favourite genre. I regard it as a prime contributor to restoring the balance disrupted by the traditional notion of a Hollywoodian happy ending.
