EDITOR’S NOTES
The Hitch-Hiker is a 1953 film noir directed by Ida Lupino (the first woman director ever to direct a noir), co-written by Ida Lupino and Collier Young, and starring Edmond O’Brien, Frank Lovejoy and William Talman. The Hitch-Hiker is a claustrophobic road movie, Ida Lupino’s purest cinematic venture and the director’s best film in her own opinion.
“To heighten the film’s suspense, I shot scenes in the claustrophobic confines of the car, and to intensify the grit outside, on hot, barren expanses of the desert.” Ida Lupino
I am an optimistic by nature, but I hate forced happy endings. Maybe that’s why film noir is my favourite genre. I regard it as a prime contributor to restoring the balance disrupted by the traditional notion of a Hollywoodian happy ending.
