EDITOR’S NOTES
Beat the Devil is a 1939 film noir directed by Busby Berkeley and starring John Garfield, Claude Rains and Ann Sheridan. John Garfield is Johnnie, a champion prizefighter who believes he killed another man in a drunken fight, so he flees West to lie low.
I am an optimistic by nature, but I hate forced happy endings. Maybe that’s why film noir is my favourite genre. I regard it as a prime contributor to restoring the balance disrupted by the traditional notion of a Hollywoodian happy ending.
