In the autumn of 1974, filmmaker Werner Herzog found out that his close friend, film historian and critic Lotte H. Eisner, was very ill. Herzog decided to go to Paris by foot, convinced that his act of walking would prevent Eisner from dying. He took a jacket, a compass and a duffel bag of the barest essentials and, wearing a pair of new boots, set off on a three-week pilgrimage from Munich to Paris through the deep chill and snowstorms of winter. Of Walking in Ice is the diary of that journey that took place between November 23 and December 14, 1974.
